The hydrogel from Maurten comes with an extra portion of 100 milligrams of caffeine per portion. So that you can still find the last few grains at the end and maybe it doesn't hurt so much anymore. Otherwise, this product also impresses with the thing that made the Scandinavians great in endurance sports and especially in triathlon: a consistency reminiscent of jelly that makes it easy on the stomach and lets you absorb up to 120 grams of carbohydrates per hour. One gel contains 25 grams of it and if I combine it, then with the other products from Maurten such as the Drink Mix 320 (link) and the new Solid 160 bar (link), which you can also find here in the shop.
As always, it's worth trying it out in training so that it works in competition. I find this gel to be pleasantly mild in terms of taste. It is sweet, like everything with two types of sugar in it, but not too sweet or overpowered by too many flavors. No colorings or preservatives are used here either, otherwise this can quickly backfire on people with sensitive stomachs.
The specific ingredients are these seven: water, glucose, fructose, calcium carbonate, caffeine, gluconic acid, sodium alginate.
The problem with Maurten (as with all other really good sports nutritionists), namely the relatively high price, can be put into perspective by the fact that it is fuel for the day of the race, which you often work towards for months. And I have indeed experienced many energy flops because I simply ate something that was cheap or had been added during the race.
Maurten tests its products at Informed Sports for contamination with doping substances and is a partner of Ironman, among others. The right nutrition is particularly important on the long-distance triathlon so that you don't end up on the portable toilet or have to crawl to the finish line on your nipples. Numerous top professionals rely on the Swedes' products and now finish in areas that were unimaginable just a few years ago.
These twelve gels weigh 480 grams, which corresponds to 9.36 euros per 100 grams.
