The new two-piece Solid 160 bar from Maurten is oat-based and comes in two flavours: 160 in what I consider to be "naturally sweet" and C 160 with cocoa added for more variety.
Each pack contains 40 grams of carbohydrates in 55 grams and the two-part principle makes it easy to take on the go, even if you're already gasping for breath. I think the consistency is really good because it's not as hard as some of the other bars on the market.
Both flavors provide you with a whole range of energy sources: fructose-glucose syrup, gluten-free oats, maltodextrin, sugar and rice flour. Salt is also included, but no extra caffeine. As is always the case with such products, it may also contain traces of milk, soy, gluten, sesame, nuts and peanuts.
The twelve bars weigh 660 grams, which corresponds to a price of 5.45 euros for 100 grams. The problem with Maurten (as with all other really good sports nutrition products), namely the relatively high price, can be put into perspective by the fact that it is fuel for the day of the competition, which you often work towards for months. And I have indeed experienced many energy flops because I simply ate something that was cheap or was added during the race.
Maurten tests its products at Informed Sports for contamination with doping substances and is a partner of Ironman, among others. The right nutrition is particularly important on the long-distance triathlon so that you don't end up on the portable toilet or have to crawl to the finish line on your nipples. Numerous top professionals rely on the Swedes' products and now finish in areas that were unimaginable just a few years ago.
