JCOB Type 5 Saddle for Triathlon, Time Trial, and Sporty Positions on Road Bikes

One of the classics when it comes to sporty and aerodynamic seating positions on triathlon and time trial bikes.

  • Developed for triathlon and time trial bikes
  • Classic split-nose saddle
  • A model for many other designs
  • Relieves pressure on the perineal area
  • Allows for sporty seating positions
  • Suits many rider types equally well
  • 55 millimeter width in the front area
  • Wide adjustment range due to 105 mm rails
  • Practical rear hook for transition zones

The Type 5 is the evolution of the JOF Fifty-Five and the Cobb 55, which I already recommended in my time trial hacks in 2018. Personally, after trying any other saddle, I always return to this model. Contrary to what is often said and written, this saddle suits an astonishing number of athletes, regardless of their size, weight, flexibility, or the distances they ride and their ambitions.

The cutout between the two saddle noses, the shape of the contact surface, and the not-too-soft/not-too-firm padding are likely the reasons for this. Precisely this combination allows the torso to rotate far forward and down around the bottom bracket without immediately building up pressure in the perineal area.

With the Type 5, the crucial area where primary support occurs (the perineum, not the sit bones) is 55 millimeters wide, setting standards for many successors.

Deliberately, metal rails are used instead of carbon. One of the advantages, besides price and robustness, is that you can perfectly attach bottle cages that can be tightened firmly, like the RM-P 2 from Profile Design.

The hook at the rear is practical for racks in the transition zone during triathlon. However, it can also be unscrewed if horizontal bottle cages are to be mounted.

Depending on your previous saddle, this saddle may initially feel a bit hard, which is intentional. Excessive padding, especially at the front of the nose, can otherwise cause the soft padding material to be pressed into your "soft tissues" when compressed, leading to problems.
